Chihuahua Training

Chihuahuas make great pets for any animal lover. However, if you've ever owned one you know they arn't exactly the easiest to train. Following these Chihuahua training tips will help ensure your Chihuahua becomes well-trained.

Many chihuahuas have a stubborn personality making them less likely to obey you, but think twice before taking your Chihuahua to a dog obedience training class at the local pet store. Oftentimes they are filled with large dogs and unprofessional trainers, which actually creates a dangerous environment for your Chihuahua. This is why more and more Chihuahua owners are learning how to teach their Chihuahua obedience on their own. Following these guidelines should help you raise a loyal, and obedient Chihuahua.

  • Potty-Training - A large number of people decide to own a Chihuahua because they are small and that makes them good for being indoors. Like all indoor dogs, Chihuahuas need to be potty-trained.

The best time to start potty-training your Chihuahua is when they are still a puppy, because they will retain those memories easier when they are young. But don't worry if your Chihuahua isn't a puppy, they can still be trained.

Potty-train your Chihuahua by taking them outside to familiar area and saying a specific command, such as "go potty", or "go pee". Be sure to take your Chihuahua to the same area everytime you take them out. They will recognize the scent and associate it with going potty. When your Chihuahua goes potty give them their favorite doggie treat and lots of praise.

No matter how hard you try to avoid it, accidents will happen. When your Chihuahua goes potty inside the house, just speak firmly "NO", and go back outside with your Chihuahua. There is no need to spank, or stick their nose in it. That can only have a negative effect, and may make your Chihuahua less able to train.

Confine your Chihuahua to a crate at night time and when noone can watch them. They shouldn't go potty in their crate because they have to sleep in it. When you first wake up, take your Chihuahua outside to go potty.

Keep a close eye on your Chihuahua at all times. Don't let your Chihuahua wonder around from room to room until they are fully potty-trained. Besides going potty, you never know what they can get into.

Don't let your Chihuahua over drink. Some dogs will keep drinking just because it's there. Also, don't let your Chihuahua drink alot right before they go to sleep.

Some people use the various "pee-pads" for potty-training their Chihuahua. I wouldn't recommend this, as you don't ever want your Chihuahua to think it is ok to go potty inside.

That's the basics to potty-training a Chihuahua. Hope it help!

  • Command Training - Some simple commands an owner can train their Chihuahua are sit, stand, or rollover. If you want to teach your Chihuahua one of these commands start by speaking the command to him and your Chihuahua does it, give them a treat. If they don't do it correctly, you can help place their body in the desired position.

You don't want to confuse your Chihuahua with different commands. When you want to teach a command, only teach one at a time. After your Chihuahua learns one command, you can move on to the next.

Chihuahuas tire fairly fast, so try to keep your training sessions short. Usually 20-30 minute training sessions, once a day is good.

Keep your training area distraction-free. Such things as kids playing, the television being on, music, or other noises can be distractions for your Chihuahua. Be sure your training environment is free of these things.

Use treats, treats, and more treats when training. Most dogs, Chihuahuas included, love treats and will do anything for them. They are a great incentive to help train your Chihuahua. But remember, only give your Chihuahua a treat when they what you ask.
