Foods That Are Dangerous To a Chihuahua


Chihuahuas have a tendency to the eat some of the same foods we eat. They either get it from us feeding them our table scraps, or them being mischievous and getting into some. While this might not be bad for some of the bigger dog breeds, it can be dangerous for a small Chihuahua. Certain foods that we eat can cause a wide variety of serious health issues, or even death, if consumed by a Chihuahua.

If you are one of the many people feeding their pet Chihuahua your leftovers from the table, you should stop now. Feeding your Chihuahua table food can not only cause obesity for your tiny canine friend, but some foods can be much more dangerous. This is why it is important to avoid feeding them table food and give them only a healthy diet of premium dog food made for their size. However, if you want to spoil them once in a while, you can cook up some boneless and skinless chicken or beef. Just be sure it is fully cooked to avoid parasites and food poisoning.

While it may sound say simple enough to avoid feeding your Chihuahua your leftovers, they may still get into some. Knowing what foods can be dangerous is important for any Chihuahua owner.

Both grapes and raisins can be extremely dangerous if eaten by a Chihuahua. Even in small amounts they can cause kidney failure in their systems, which could lead to death.

Most fruits and vegetables in general can be dangerous for a Chihuahua to consume. Apples, carrots, beans, lettuce. tomatoes, onions, avocados, peaches, and cherries are some of the most harmful and should be kept away from them at all times.

Chances are you've probably heard someone tell you that if you feed a dog chocolate it will kill them. Well, it can cause seizures, coma, and even death if it is concentrated enough (most bakers chocolate is). While most milk chocolate isn't strong enough to do, it should still always be avoided.

Some people wouldn't think twice about giving their dog a beef or pork bone. However, bones should never be given to a Chihuahua. When they start chewing them, they can easily break off and splinter, causing internal damage once swallowed. Sticks from outside in the yard work in the same manner and should also be avoided.

Your Chihuahua has probably eaten salt in one way or another during their life. But, salt in large amounts can cause their kidneys to shut down. It's always better to be safe than sorry and avoid feeding them anything with salt in it.

While these are some of the most dangerous foods for a Chihuahua to consume, you should remember to only feed your Chihuahua dog food with the occasional boneless and skinless beef or chicken. This will help them live a long and healthy life!
