Hazards For Chihuahuas
If you're already a Chihuahua owner, or thinking of becoming one in the near future, you need to be know what hazards could potentially harm your Chihuahua. While you may already know some of the hazards for Chihuahuas, chances are there are others that you would have never thought of.Chihuahuas are curious little canines. They will go around searching through different rooms on your house. When you first bring your Chihuahua into your home, you should keep them confined to one area of the house, such as the living room, or kitchen. This will allow you to keep a better watch on them, and keep them from getting into trouble in other parts of your house.
What most people don't realize is that because Chihuahuas are so small, chemicals can affect their bodies to a larger degree. Just a small amount of fertalizer from an open bag in the garage could be a deadly hazard to a tiny Chihuahua. Before you bring any Chihuahuas into your home, you should make sure all your outdoor, and indoor chemicals are in a safe place that your Chihuahua cant get to. In addition, make sure there are no dangerous chemicals that have spilled on the ground. Chihuahuas like to lick and taste things, even if they don't know what it is.
I know a lot of Chihuahua owners like to feed their dogs table food, but you have to be careful. Certain foods can be extremely hazardous to your Chihuahuas health. Chocolate, grapes, raisens, milk, bones, and anything containing caffine are considered toxic for Chihuahuas and should always be kept away from them. It is recommended to only feed your Chihuahua dog food, and treats. This way you can be sure you're not giving them anything that could harm them.
This might seem like common sense to some people, but big dogs can pose a hazardous threat to small Chihuahuas. Even if you have big dog that is sweet, and doesn't bite, it can be provoked by a Chihuahua. You should keep your Chihuahua seperate from any big dogs you have until they are used to each other, and even then you should keep a close eye on them.
Children can also be a hazard to your Chihuahua. They don't realize how small, and fragile a Chihuahua is, and often they will pull, or poke them. Not only can your Chihuahua suffer from broken bones, and bruises, but they could also bite back at anyone provoking them.
There are certain household objects which could pose a hazard for Chihuahuas. Stairs, or drop-offs should be blocked off from your Chihuahuas. Other things like lamps hanging slightly off a table could also be dangerous. Take a moment to go through your house, and ask yourself if it could be hazardous for your Chihuahua.
Extreme weather, both hot and cold, can also be hazardous to your Chihuahua. You should consider buying some Chihuahua clothes to help keep your tiny canine warm during the cold months. Something as simple as a shirt, or sweater will provide a great deal of protection from the cold. During the hot summer months you need to be sure you're not allowing your Chihuahua stay outside for long periods of time. It's easy for a Chihuahua to become dehydrated in such hot temperatures.
These are just a couple of everyday hazards Chihuahuas face. While these are some of the most common, there are still many others, and it's up to you to help protect your Chihuahua.
